“No. Chinese.”

▲Jeremy Hunt

Jeremy Hunt, Britain’s new foreign secretary, has made an awkward debut in China when he sought to curry favour with his hosts by mentioning his Chinese wife, but accidentally referred to her as “Japanese”.

“My wife is Japanese – my wife is Chinese. That’s a terrible mistake to make,” he told his counterpart, the Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi.

“My wife is Chinese and my children are half-Chinese and so we have Chinese grandparents who live in Xi’an and strong family connections in China,” he added.

@Allan P:

That's just what we need. A foreign Secretary who doesn't know the difference between China and Japan.

@GP:

What a moron! Do we have any intelligent politicians in parliament today?

@Jocky:

His stupidity is astounding

@Clive Ruffle:

Poor Lucia Guo. Imagine having to suffer an incompetent wally like Jeremy Hunt as a husband.

@Big Copper:

" I supported Brexit..err...I supported Remain."     "Haahaa, chuckle, chuckle."

1. China and Japan are bitter rivals

Of all the countries to get confused with, Japan is probably the worst one.

Among China's older generation, there are plenty of people who are reluctant to buy Japanese products or go to Japan on holiday - because they accuse Japan of playing down its wartime atrocities.

And there were several anti-Japanese protests across China in 2012, when tensions over the disputed islands flared up.

2. He was talking about his own wife

Mr Hunt speaks Japanese and worked in Japan - and says he spoke with Mr Wang in Japanese - which might explain why it was on his mind at the meeting.

But even then, it's awkward explaining why "Japanese" slipped out at a conference with Chinese officials - especially since he was talking about his own wife.

3. It fits a bad stereotype

There's a common joke that East Asians "all look the same" - and many East Asians have complained that people make lazy assumptions about what race they are.

Most East Asians I know would agree that it's not the worst mistake someone could make - butit's still pretty annoying.

@Roger TJ Zhang:

Yes I would be. Allow me to explain my answer. My problem is not so much being call a Japanese person or Korean or Chinese, but with people making assumptions about me based on some stereotypical image of Japanese, Chinese or Korean or [any other asian ethnicity].

Instead of calling somebody Japanese or Chinese, perhaps you could ask them first. For instance, you could ask me “What’s your cultural background?” or “Are you Japanese/ Chinese?”. I would be perfectly happy to answer you and then perhaps we could have an intelligent conversation about my culture.

@Josephine Stefani (陳圻):

Eh. Offended, no. Mildly annoyed, yes.

Because it really isn’t any of your business to come up to me and label me like that. Unless we’re in Japan; in that case ‘konnichiha’ me as much as you want.

@Elisa Xu:

Not offended, but just slightly annoyed.

I mean, you didn’t even bother to say hi! Who the heck are you? Why are you making these assumptions?

@Sara Tung:

Have you ever heard someone say “all Asians look alike?”

Well, my mom seemed to think that all Caucasians look alike. When I was in the fifth grade, my best friend Beth was Caucasian. Every time we saw a Caucasian girl around the same age, mom would say “that looks like Beth.” The person never looked anything like Beth other than being Caucasian.

@Tyn Krisy:

If because of similar appearance, it doesn't matter.

If because of other reasons, I will.

For example, a pretty Chinese girl wearing a beautiful dress like this style (called lolita)walked on the street in America.

"No."

"No."

"No."

………

He asked almost every country in Asia, only except China.

Maybe in his mind, it is impossible for Chinese girls to dress beautifully.

It is true, not a story.
